Using a plausible model for the cellular clock, we make experimental predictions that can help to distinguish between two possible mechanisms underlying these unusual properties. The mechanisms consist of a 'weak oscillator' , i.e., an oscillator easily affected by the typical neural input generated by light, and 'strong stimulus', i.e. an amplified neural input which can affect an oscillator of normal strength. Though both mechanisms are possible, an initial experimental result points toward the weak oscillator scenario.
